This video is of a "Tracker" from squadron VS-33 homeported in San Diego at NAS North Island launching off the carrier USS Ticonderoga (CVS-14) Nov 1971. As you can tell, the seas were rough! Following the takeoff--after everyone who observed it had time to settle down, the Air Boss called the pilot of the bird, "Youngster 105," intentions? The answer came slowly from the pilot, one of our newer Plane Commanders, "I think I'll climb to 1500 feet and have myself a cigarette!" I think you'll agree, that was a good call.
This video was supplied to us by a retired Commander who was flying overhead when this incident happened. This video is courtesy of USS Ticonderoga (CVS-14) Air Department.
